On Friday, 17 May 2024, at approximately 17:49, security cameras in a spaza shop located in South Africa’s northern interior recorded a dramatic incident.
Two men entered the shop with suspicious intentions. The footage showed them checking to ensure no one was approaching before they moved in to execute their plan.
One of the suspects, wearing an orange shirt, initially seemed to change his mind and approached the counter to make a legitimate purchase.
His accomplice, however, did not share this hesitation. He suddenly lunged toward one of the shopkeepers, brandishing a weapon.
The situation quickly escalated. The suspect in the orange shirt, perhaps reconsidering his involvement, fled the scene, abandoning his partner.
The remaining suspect attempted to force the cashier to open the safe. In a surprising twist, however, the cashier managed to overpower and disarm the assailant.
Eyewitnesses, drawn by the commotion, quickly surrounded the suspect and administered their own form of justice.
Ironically, the suspect, who had come to intimidate and rob, ended up crying for help as he was apprehended.
Police arrived and arrested the would-be robber, charging him with attempted robbery. It remains unclear if his accomplice was also captured.
Why spaza shops are targets for robberies
Spaza shops, small informal retail outlets commonly found in South African townships, are frequent targets for robberies due to several factors:

- Isolation and Visibility: These shops are typically located in residential areas with minimal police presence. Poor lighting, especially at night, further reduces the chances of robbers being seen or interrupted.
- Routine and Predictability: The operating hours and routines of spaza shops are predictable. Criminals can easily plan their attacks knowing when the shop will have the most cash on hand and when it is least protected.
- Lack of Support from Authorities: There is often a perception that crimes against spaza shops are not a priority for law enforcement, which can embolden criminals to target these businesses repeatedly.
