At least 10 suspects have been placed under arrest for their involvement in a shootout between a cash-in-transit (CIT) syndicate and South African police in Rossettenville, Gauteng, on Monday.
What happened in Rossettenville?
As reported by IOL News, at least eight gunmen were killed in a fiery encounter with law enforcement officials, south of Johannesburg, in what turned out to be a successful sting operation.
According to IPID (independent police investigative directorate) spokesperson Grace Langa, a convoy of armed robbers, consisting of five stolen vehicles, was intercepted on its way to pull off a CIT heist in Rossettenville.
The confrontation between at least 18 armed suspects and police turned violent when gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the instant deaths of eight alleged robbers.

At least five police officers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals to receive emergency medical treatment.
Langa further confirmed that at least 10 suspects were arrested, two of which were seriously wounded.
The IPID spokesperson revealed that the group taken into custody included:
- four South Africans from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN);
- five Zimbabwean nationals; and
- one man from Botswana deemed to be the mastermind behind a string of CIT heists in the province.
“The suspect from Botswana is a mastermind in cash-in-transits in South Africa. He is a wanted criminal for a long time, and finally, they managed to arrest him,” Langa noted.

The suspects arrested in Rossettenville face a string of serious criminal charges, including attempted murder, as well as unlawful possession of firearms and explosives, among others.
Thus far, Langa confirmed, police have more than 100 bullets to examine, and possibly link to other crimes, five stolen vehicles to process for further charges, as well as an arsenal of assault weapons, including AK47s with double magazines, R4s, explosives and petrol.
