The Montblanc jewellery boutique at Gateway Mall, Umhlanga Ridge, was targeted in a brazen daytime robbery this past weekend, and the entire ordeal was captured on CCTV.
Watch: Montblanc Gateway Mall robbery caught on CCTV
According to metadata found in the footage, the robbery took place on Sunday at approximately 09:32, only 30 minutes or so after the store had opened for business.
The morning traffic inside the KZN shopping mall was disrupted by at least five suspects who casually strolled into the boutique and, perhaps, pulled off the most amateurish jewellery heist ever recorded.
It’s unclear, at this stage, if any of the store’s employees were harmed during the robbery.
In the video clip, a man wearing a bucket hat and face mask is seen walking into the store. He pulls an object out of his waist, presumably a firearm, and proceeds to one corner of the boutique, while four others follow behind him.
For about 50 seconds, the men walk aimlessly in the shop, seemingly dazed and unsure where to start the pillaging.
Finally, after a brief moment of confusion, two of the robbers smash two protective glass casings and grab the jewellery on display. At this point, things get interesting.
Without context, it is unclear what spooked the robbers but, towards the end of the clip, the five perpetrators were seen in a frenzy. The bags they had brought to the robbery were dumped on the floor and as they made their exit, it appears as if they encountered some resistance.
The video clip abruptly ends as the robbers bolted out of the Montblanc Boutique.
Gateway Mall issued a statement on the incident, confirming to Swisher Post the following facts:
“Gateway’s security and tactical team responded to the scene, whilst the control room followed camera footage. The perpetrators got into a vehicle near the circle and subsequently headed South. The Tactical team provided detail to SAPS who tracked the suspects vehicle on the N2 South where the search continued.
“There were no shots fired as per information circulating on social media and nobody was injured. Gateway continues to work with both the SAPS and private security professionals to ensure a safe shopping experience for customers. This remains the centres number one priority.”
