The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is set to resume on Friday, 7 November 2025, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 10:00 SAST.

The High Court in Pretoria will continue hearing testimony as the state cross-examines accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, over cellphone and financial records that prosecutors argue place him in Gauteng at the time of the soccer star’s death.

According to details heard in court this week, State Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi took Sibiya through several prepaid airtime purchases linked to a number registered under a different mobile network.

The state believes the alternate number was used by Sibiya around the period when Meyiwa was shot in Vosloorus in October 2014.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng questioned the accused about his phone activity, asking, “If you had the use of this number, the Vodacom number, why was it necessary to make all these 15 recharges during this period?”

Baloyi responded that the transactions formed part of the state’s argument that Sibiya had been using a separate cellphone for communication leading up to and after the shooting.

Earlier in the week, Baloyi also confronted Sibiya with evidence of financial transactions from multiple bank accounts registered in his name. The court heard that there were several withdrawals made in Gauteng throughout 2014.

Sibiya maintained that the bank cards were in the possession of his child’s mother, Mbali Moyo, at the time.

However, Baloyi pointed to one particular transaction that could only have been made by the account holder.

“On 29 September 2014, there’s a branch card replacement fee of R40, so that means it could only have been you, Mr Sibiya, that could ask for a card replacement,” Baloyi said.

Sibiya conceded that it was possible he had replaced the card on that date, adding that the account had been opened in Lesedi.

When Baloyi asked, “Is that Vosloorus?”, Sibiya confirmed, “Yes.” Baloyi concluded that, by Sibiya’s own admission, he was in Gauteng on 29 September 2014 — mere weeks before Meyiwa’s killing.

The state is expected to continue its line of questioning today, focusing on communications and financial activity that prosecutors say link Sibiya to the events surrounding the murder.
