The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes today at the Pretoria High Court, where accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, will continue facing tough cross-examination from State Prosecutor George Baloyi.

The proceedings begin at 10:00 (SAST) and will be streamed live in the video below.

Sibiya has been under questioning for nearly two weeks, as the State works to expose inconsistencies in his testimony about the events leading up to the 2014 murder of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

Throughout the questioning, Baloyi has focused on statements Sibiya allegedly made after his arrest in 2020 — particularly a confession that investigators claim matches key details from other State witnesses.

Sibiya, however, insists the confession was forced, arguing that he was assaulted by police officers until he agreed to sign documents he never read.

During Monday’s session, Baloyi pointed out that parts of Sibiya’s alleged confession align closely with accounts given by other witnesses, including descriptions of how two men entered the Vosloorus home where Meyiwa was shot.

“The version contained in both exhibits describes how two people entered the house, demanded cellphones and money, and that there was a struggle before Mr. Meyiwa was shot,” Baloyi said.

Defence advocate Zandile Mshololo objected, arguing that Baloyi’s summary of events did not match witness testimony.

“My Lord, that does not accord with the evidence of Tumelo Madlala. He never implicated the individuals referred to as Marco and Makhimbi,” she said.

Baloyi clarified that he was referring to the similarities in structure between the statements, not the identities of the suspects. “Maybe let me rephrase,” he said.

“Two people entered the house, demanded cellphones and money, and a struggle ensued, during which Mr. Senzo Meyiwa was shot.”

Sibiya firmly denied the prosecutor’s assertions.

“I’ve already indicated that I do not know anything about this,” he told the court.

“The people you should ask are Gininda and Mbotho. I’ve been saying that I do not know anything about the shooting of Senzo.”

The accused — Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli — have all pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms.

The State alleges that the five conspired to kill Meyiwa in what was first described as a botched robbery at the home of singer Kelly Khumalo, Meyiwa’s girlfriend at the time.

Sibiya maintains his innocence and claims that the confession was fabricated by lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda. He also denies pointing out the crime scene or providing any information to the police about the murder.

The cross-examination is expected to continue for most of the week as the State probes whether Sibiya’s statement could have been influenced by inside knowledge of the crime scene or leaked details from police investigators.
