The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes today in the Pretoria High Court, where the State is expected to continue pressing defence witness Absalom Zungu on a 2019 statement police claim shifted the direction of the investigation.

Five men are on trial for the 2014 killing of the Bafana Bafana captain.

Zungu has repeatedly distanced himself from the contents of that statement, which detectives say he made in November 2019.

According to the State, the document linked accused number one Muzi Sibiya and accused number two Bongani Ntanzi to the shooting.

Zungu insists he never provided such information and maintains that the police attributed details to him that he did not supply.

His evidence has become a focal point of this phase of the trial as prosecutors attempt to establish whether Zungu’s account changed between his interactions with investigators and his testimony in court.

Thursday’s session is also expected to revisit tense exchanges from earlier in the week.

Proceedings briefly escalated when Advocate Charles Mnisi, representing Sibiya, clashed with presiding Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng.

Mnisi has argued that the contested statement forms part of a pattern of investigative irregularities that, he says, compromised the arrests of the accused.

The State maintains the 2019 document was a critical breakthrough that redirected the inquiry and ultimately led to the arrests.

Zungu continues to deny any involvement in supplying the information police say originated from him.

His testimony is expected to continue today as both sides seek clarity on the events that led to the compilation of the disputed statement.
