What led to the hearing

Jayden‑Lee went missing after school on 13 May 2025. He was expected home by 15:30, but when he did not arrive, Tiffany said she had no airtime and asked her mother to call the school transport driver.

The driver confirmed having dropped Jayden‑Lee off at their home, though no sign of the boy was found in his house.

Both mother and police then visited the Swazi Place Complex. One security guard said he let Jayden‑Lee into the building, and another child confirmed seeing him exit the school transport.

Despite searching into the night, nothing was found. Tragically, the next morning—14 May—Jayden‑Lee’s body was discovered in a stairwell—he was still in his uniform and showed signs of physical injuries.

Defence calls foul play allegations

Tiffany Meek has consistently maintained she is being framed. Her lawyer, Advocate Novel Naidoo, is cross‑examining State witnesses and pointing out inconsistencies in the accounts of the evening.

Evidence like Jayden‑Lee’s school bag, reportedly missing earlier, was later found in their apartment—something Naidoo says doesn’t fit the timeline of Meek’s story.

Tiffany faces multiple charges: murder, crimen injuria (which means harming someone’s dignity), and two related to interfering with justice. She has offered R5,000 bail and proposed living with relatives in Meadowland, KwaZulu‑Natal, while her case proceeds.

State prosecutor Olga Mapokgole argued against granting bail. She emphasised the severity of the charges and confusion in Meek’s statements about what happened the night Jayden‑Lee disappeared. The court also learned Meek had allegedly claimed she spent that night at her mother’s home—but evidence contradicted that claim.

“This is not just about risk of flight, but also the seriousness of the crime and the way the accused has responded to the investigation,” Mapokgole told the court.

What happens next?

The live bail hearing will continue with Naidoo’s cross-examination of additional State witnesses. After cross-examination, the defence may choose to call its own witnesses. Viewers can follow along with the live stream, embedded in this article.

The magistrate will likely deliver a ruling on bail later today, deciding whether Tiffany can be released or must remain in custody.

The outcome will influence whether Tiffany will remain behind bars or be granted temporary freedom as the legal process continues.
