According to an official statement from Western Cape SAPS, the suspect is facing multiple charges following the incident. Police confirmed the man was arrested for reckless and negligent driving, possession of drugs, malicious injury to property, and resisting arrest.

The pursuit began in Wynberg when officers from the Metro Police, on patrol along Church Street, spotted a white Volkswagen Polo being driven recklessly. When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to comply and fled, prompting a call for reinforcements.

Law enforcement teams pursued the suspect through various neighbourhoods, with the driver reportedly swerving against oncoming traffic. The chase escalated further when shots were fired by police at the suspect’s tyres in an effort to stop the vehicle at Sunrise Circle in Muizenberg.

The car was eventually intercepted, and the suspect was apprehended. SAPS stated:

“The suspect was arrested and taken to a medical facility for assessment and treatment for a laceration to the head, where after he was detained.”

The man is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court once he has been officially charged.

Footage of the chase surfaced online shortly after the incident, showing a white Polo being followed by police vehicles and bystanders expressing alarm at the commotion.

The video quickly went viral, with many questioning the nature of the incident.

The swift apprehension of the suspect marked the end of what could have been a dangerous situation for other road users.

In an unrelated case, police in the Woodstock area conducted a separate operation on Saturday, 5 July 2025, aimed at disrupting drug trafficking in the community.

This operation was triggered by intelligence gathered about suspected drug activities at two properties in Wright Street.

At the first location, a 69-year-old man was arrested after police discovered 45 units of heroin and several mandrax tablets.

At another property on the same street, a 40-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man were taken into custody. Their home search yielded 245 sachets of tik (methamphetamine), 13 units of unga (a drug mixture), and more mandrax tablets.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court soon to face drug possession and trafficking charges.

These arrests are part of a wider effort by Woodstock SAPS to curb substance abuse and criminal activity in the area, particularly in neighbourhoods most vulnerable to drug-related crime.
