The suspects appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court, where they faced multiple charges related to the incident. The courtroom was filled with tense anticipation as details of their alleged involvement were presented.
The charges stem from a hijacking that occurred earlier this month, during which young Ditebogo was fatally shot while welcoming his father home.
The arrests of Maeko, Sithole, and Gumbo follow weeks of intensive investigation by law enforcement agencies.
Although several arrests had been made earlier, these three individuals are the first to be formally charged with the crime.
A breakdown of the charges they face
State prosecutor, Advocate Tumelo Letaoane, detailed the charges against the suspects during their court appearance.
The primary charge is murder, linked directly to the fatal shooting of Ditebogo Phalane Jr. In addition to this, the suspects face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, reflecting the violent nature of the hijacking.
Nido Gumbo faces an additional charge for being in the country illegally, in violation of the Immigration Act.
The matter has been postponed to August to allow for further investigation, during which additional evidence and testimonies are expected to be gathered.
During the arrests, police recovered two unlicensed firearms, one of which is believed to be the murder weapon. These firearms are undergoing forensic testing to confirm their involvement in the crime.
