The first Reiger Park suspect linked to the mass shooting that left six people dead and three others injured is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court today.
The 23-year-old man was arrested on Monday night, following an intensive manhunt by the Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and Crime Intelligence operatives.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect was tracked down after key information was provided by residents in the community.
“The investigation team worked tirelessly since the incident occurred, and through community cooperation, we were able to identify and apprehend one of the alleged shooters,” Nevhuhulwi said .
The shooting took place on the evening of 1 November 2025, around 18:50 SAST, across several streets in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni — including William Street, Stanbury Road, Regent Street, and Martin du Preez Street.
According to witnesses, a group of armed men opened fire from a moving vehicle before speeding off, leaving behind chaos and multiple casualties.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said that six men were declared dead at the scene, while three others were rushed to nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds.
The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, but police believe it may be linked to ongoing gang violence in the East Rand.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola visited the area shortly after the incident and deployed a specialised investigation team made up of Hawks and Crime Intelligence officers to stabilise the community and track down suspects.
“We came here because what happened cannot continue. I have deployed additional investigators to ensure those responsible are arrested and the area remains secure,” Masemola told residents earlier this week .
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi also condemned the killings, calling the attack “heartless” and demanding swift justice.
“The entire country is in mourning,” he said.
“We must not keep meeting because people are dead — we must meet because criminals are going to prison.”
Acting provincial commissioner Major General Fred Kekana praised the investigative team for their swift work.
“From our engagements with the community, we can see that people have heard our plea to cooperate with the police and rid our neighbourhoods of criminal elements,” Kekana said.
He urged residents to continue working with authorities to dismantle gang structures and expose those involved in violent crimes.
The Reiger Park suspect is expected to face multiple counts of murder and attempted murder when he appears in court.
Police sources indicate that more arrests are imminent as investigators follow leads pointing to additional suspects believed to have coordinated the drive-by attack.
Today’s proceedings at the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court are expected to begin at 09:30 SAST and will be streamed live below.
