Two people have been killed and six others wounded in a Westbury mass shooting in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, authorities have confirmed.

The incident unfolded in the densely populated suburb west of the city, where residents have long battled high levels of gang-related violence and drug activity.

According to a statement by private security firm Vision Tactical, emergency response teams and law enforcement rushed to the scene after receiving reports of multiple gunshots.

“Reports of a mass shooting in Westbury. Seven children reportedly shot and in critical condition. Two children have tragically passed away,” the company said.

Vision Tactical added that its officers were working closely with police and paramedics to secure the scene and assist victims.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a case of murder and attempted murder.

Paramedics treated several victims at the scene before transporting them to nearby hospitals. Two children were declared dead, while others remain in critical condition.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased as families are still being notified.

The Westbury community has repeatedly called for stronger police presence and long-term crime prevention strategies.

Over the years, the suburb has become a flashpoint for violent crime driven by gang rivalries and narcotics trade. Despite occasional security operations, residents say they still live in fear of sporadic shootings.

As investigations continue, law enforcement agencies have increased patrols in the area and appealed to the public to avoid sharing unverified information circulating online.

This is a developing story.
