On Sunday night, a violent altercation in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, resulted in the deaths of two members of the MK Party (MKP).
Two MK Party members killed in shooting
According to authorities, the incident occurred in the Thwala section and involved a dispute with individuals affiliated with the African National Congress (ANC).
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the tragic event, stating:
“It is reported the two [MKP] members were shot and killed during a dispute with members affiliated with the ANC at Thwala section. One victim died at the scene while the other was declared dead on arrival at hospital.”
Following the incident, police recovered one firearm and a knife at the scene.
A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murders, and the police have stated that the motive for the killings will be a key focus of their investigation.
The arrested individual is expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the incident.
This shooting has added to the growing concerns about political violence as the country heads into the 2024 general elections.
The killings of the MKP members come on the heels of another politically charged incident involving Jossey Buthane, a member of the ANC and former member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Buthane was arrested on charges of attempted murder following a shooting in Juju Valley, Seshego, during political campaigning on Sunday, 19 May 2024.
In that incident, a 25-year-old man was injured, and a nine-year-old girl was shot in the head.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure has since moved to assure the public that they are prepared to maintain order during the elections.
Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili stated on Sunday:
“We are confident we are ready for this next phase.”
