Pretoria SAPS office robbery attempt: Here’s everything we know
On Sunday, 16 July 2023, a group of 12 individuals disguised in police uniforms infiltrated the premises, overpowering and restraining security personnel.
Intricate Robbery Attempt
In a brazen display of criminal audacity, a group of 12 suspects wearing police uniforms targeted the police forensic facility in Silverton, Pretoria.
They swiftly neutralised the on-duty security personnel, restraining them and seizing their belongings. The suspects then focused their efforts on building block D, where they aimed to gain access to a safe containing drugs.
However, their attempts to breach the safe proved unsuccessful, thanks to the timely intervention of patrolling police officers.
Confrontation and Injury
As the police officers confronted the suspects, a violent exchange ensued. During the altercation, one constable was shot and sustained injuries.
Emergency medical services promptly transported the wounded officer to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment. Although the constable’s condition is being closely monitored, authorities remain committed to ensuring his full recovery.
Foiled Robbery and Suspect Escape
Despite their efforts, the suspects were unable to retrieve any items from the targeted building. Alert police officers successfully thwarted the robbery attempt, preventing the criminals from absconding with the drugs.
Realising their failed operation, the suspects swiftly fled the scene in a white double-cab Ford Ranger, evading identification due to the absence of license plates on the vehicle.
Ongoing Investigation and Motive
Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the incident, focusing on determining the motive behind the daring robbery attempt, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed in a statement.
The identity of the suspects, their connection to the criminal underworld, and any potential ties to organised crime will be crucial aspects of the ongoing investigation.
