Police in the Western Cape have launched a serious investigation into the Philippi triple murder that took place during the early hours of Saturday, 26 July 2025.
Gunmen pose as police in deadly Philippi attack
Three young people were killed, and another woman was injured after unknown gunmen opened fire inside a home in Lower Crossroads, Philippi East.
According to a statement from Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, the attackers arrived at a residence in Hankomo Street at approximately 02:00.
The two suspects pretended to be police officers and told the people inside the house that they were “looking for something.”
Moments later, they started shooting at the occupants.
Two men, aged 19 and 20, and a 20-year-old woman were shot and died at the scene. Paramedics who arrived at the house confirmed their deaths.
A fourth victim, a 26-year-old woman, was shot in both arms.
She was taken to a hospital for treatment and is currently recovering. Her condition has not been made public.
Police have not yet arrested anyone. The motive for the shooting — the reason the attack happened — is still unknown.
Colonel Traut confirmed that the suspects escaped after the shooting and are still being sought. Police are appealing to anyone who might have seen something or has information that can help with the investigation to come forward.
The Serious and Violent Crime Unit, a group of detectives who handle major crimes like murder, is leading the investigation.
They are collecting evidence, speaking to witnesses, and working to understand why this deadly shooting happened and who is responsible.
Authorities say they will continue searching until those behind the Philippi triple murder are caught and brought to justice.
