Four prison officers were stabbed and an inmate died after violence broke out during a search at the Oudtshoorn prison in the Western Cape.

A violent stabbing incident took place at Oudtshoorn Medium A Correctional Centre in the Western Cape on Thursday, 7 August 2025, during early morning procedures.

Oudtshoorn prison stabbing leaves officials wounded, one inmate dead

The attack followed a surprise search operation the day before that had already caused tension among inmates.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, a group of prisoners attacked correctional officers during morning unlock procedures, injuring four staff members.

The inmates involved were reportedly housed in Room 005 of the prison’s A-Section.

On Wednesday, 6 August 2025, prison officials conducted an unannounced search inside the Oudtshoorn facility. This type of search is carried out without prior warning to prevent inmates from hiding illegal items, often referred to as “contraband.”

During this operation, inmates from Room 005 refused to comply, forcing officials to intervene. Once inside, officials found banned items including mobile phones and narcotics.

While the search was eventually completed, tensions remained high.

Retaliation leads to stabbing of officials

The next morning, on Thursday, 7 August, inmates from the same room launched what the department described as a “premeditated and violent assault” on officers. The attack took place around 07:55.

Eighteen officials were on duty at the time. Four of them were stabbed, with injuries to the face, head, and back. They received medical treatment and are currently being supported through the department’s Employee Assistance Programme.

One of the inmates involved in the attack was also injured. Despite receiving treatment, the inmate later died. The department stated the incident is now under investigation.

Following the attack, the prison unit where the incident took place was searched again. More weapons were found and confiscated. Inmates involved in the stabbings have been placed in solitary confinement as part of disciplinary action.

All inmate visits and activities at the facility have been suspended until further notice. The Department of Correctional Services says it remains focused on restoring safety and order at the prison.

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, condemned the violence.

“The safety of officials and inmates remains our foremost priority. Incidents of this nature are deeply concerning,” he said.
