The incident, which has sparked concern over ongoing gender-based violence, occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to initial police reports, the couple had been at a local tavern when they reportedly became involved in a heated argument.

Witnesses said the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation. It is alleged that the suspect began assaulting the woman at the tavern before the two returned to his home.

Once at the residence, the assault reportedly continued and included the use of open sticks. At around 05:00, the suspect is said to have contacted the victim’s sister after noticing that the woman was unconscious.

The sister then called emergency services and local police.

Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, but the victim was declared dead upon their arrival.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly after and has since been formally charged with murder.

At this stage, the motive for the attack is still being investigated. Police have not released further details about the relationship or prior incidents between the pair.

The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed concern and condemnation over the latest case of alleged domestic violence.

“We are deeply disturbed by the brutal killing of yet another woman, allegedly at the hands of her intimate partner,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

“We urge communities to speak out, intervene, and report abusive behaviour before it escalates. Gender-based violence has no place in our society.”

Police have confirmed that investigations into the case are ongoing and that more details may emerge as the court proceedings begin.

The suspect is due to make his first appearance before the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court, where formal charges will be presented.
