Muhamed Sajid Khan, a 44-year-old Pakistani businessman, was convicted of double homicide and attempted murder by the Pretoria High Court, on Monday.
Muhamed Sajid Khan: Pakistani national convicted of double murder
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed the middle-aged foreign national who owns at least nine properties in and around South Africa’s capital, will be sentenced on 31 May 2022, where it is expected he will be handed a life term.
On 1 February 2020, a month before the first case of COVID-19 was reported in South Africa, Khan was the subject of an inquest led by members of the Concerned Tshwane Residence (CTR), a civic organisation that oversees security and safety in the Gauteng metro.
On this fatal day, six CTR members paid a visit to one of the properties owned by Khan, situated on Luttig Street, Pretoria West, to verify if, indeed, he was the rightful holder of the property’s title deed.
Turns out, the confrontation was the trigger Khan needed to exact his sordid revenge on those who, for a long time, have questioned his reputation as a businessman.
“Upon arrival, an argument arose between Khan and a member of CTR, Khan took out a gun and shot the deceased and a bystander who also died on the scene and attempted to shoot another member of the CTR team,” the NPA revealed.
Another victim was shot but, fortunately, they were rushed to a nearby hospital where they received emergency medical attention.
Two days later, “Khan handed himself over to the police and was released on R10 000 bail.”
“After he was found guilty, State [Advocate] Eric Sihlangu, applied that Khan’s bail be revoked and the court granted the state’s application, Khan remained in custody after his conviction,” the statement concluded.
It is unclear how long Khan, a foreign national, has lived in South Africa.
