Residents of Zone 3 in Meadowlands, Soweto, woke up to a horrific scene on Monday morning after the body of a woman was found dumped near Masekhene Higher Primary School.

Police confirmed that the deceased has been identified as Lebohang Sikwane, a 39-year-old mother of three who lived on the same street as the man now accused of her murder.

Her body was discovered at around 06:00 SAST, curled up in a foetal position beside a pavement littered with debris.

According to witnesses, Sikwane appeared to have been dragged to the location using a municipal refuse bin.

Her body had a visible wound on the forehead, though the cause of the injury is still under investigation. Residents described the scene as “disturbing” and “inhumane.”

Community members followed traces of blood leading to a nearby home, where they alerted police and assisted in apprehending the suspect. The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was arrested at the scene and is expected to appear in court later this week.

Neighbours said Sikwane was well known in the area and often seen taking her children to school.

“We are heartbroken. She was a kind woman who didn’t deserve this,” said one resident.

Police forensic teams cordoned off the area for several hours as investigators collected evidence. Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said detectives from the provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit have been assigned to the case.

“We commend the community for working with law enforcement to ensure a swift arrest,” she said.

The murder has reignited public outrage over South Africa’s ongoing femicide crisis. Advocacy groups, including Women for Change, have called for urgent action and systemic reform to combat gender-based violence, which continues to claim the lives of an estimated 15 women every day .

The Womens Shutdown movement, which is planning a nationwide demonstration on 21 November 2025, has also cast a spotlight on Sikwane’s killing as another example of the deep-seated violence faced by women in South Africa.

Police investigations into Sikwane’s death continue.
