Wynberg court shooting: Here’s what we know

According to eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded when suspects emerged from a white Toyota Quantum vehicle and opened fire. One man was shot and later died from his injuries.

Although the motive for the killing has not yet been confirmed by police, early indications suggest it may be linked to gang activity. Gang-related violence in Cape Town remains a serious concern, especially in areas surrounding public facilities such as courts.

According to a statement issued by SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg:

  • “Wynberg police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident at court in Church Road, Wynberg. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his body and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.”

Despite the shooting, operations inside the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court have not been affected. Court proceedings continued as scheduled, according to staff familiar with the day’s activities.

“The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation and arrests are yet to be made. Anyone with any information about this shooting incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” police added.

While Monday’s incident is still under investigation, it has drawn comparisons to a previous murder that also took place outside the same courthouse. In May 2023, a woman named Christine Gumera was gunned down outside Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in a similarly violent and targeted attack.

Gumera had been facing a murder charge herself and was reportedly about to become a witness for the state.

In that case, four suspects were arrested and charged with her murder.

The prosecution later revealed that some of the accused had attended Gumera’s court appearance to identify and help locate her before the shooting.

She was shot twice in the head outside the courthouse, and investigators believed the killing was an attempt to silence her.

The investigation into this morning’s incident continues.
