A tense Mamelodi hostage standoff is unfolding in Tshwane, Gauteng, after a police constable allegedly took members of his own family hostage.

Shots fired before police arrived

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident began at around 08:00 (SAST) on Tuesday in the Buffer Zone area of Mamelodi East.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili, SAPS spokesperson, confirmed that the constable allegedly fired two shots before police arrived at the scene.

The officer is refusing to release his grandmother, his nephew, and another young boy who remain trapped inside the house with him.

Special police units, including negotiators and task force members, have been deployed to the scene in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.

“Negotiations are underway as law enforcement professionals assess the unfolding dynamic. The police on the scene are also investigating the motive which led to this situation,” Muridili said.

Despite these efforts, officers on the ground report that the man is still not cooperating, and the standoff remains active. Authorities say their priority is to protect the lives of the three hostages.

Family members held inside

Police have not yet released the ages of the hostage or their conditions. At this stage, no injuries have been reported, but law enforcement officials remain concerned given the earlier gunshots.

Community members have gathered near the area, with police urging them to remain at a safe distance as the crime scene is still active.

SAPS has not yet disclosed what may have led the constable to allegedly turn on his family. Brigadier Muridili said investigators are considering all possible motives and will provide updates as the situation develops.

Police made it clear that they are working towards a peaceful resolution and that force will only be used as a last resort.

As of Tuesday evening, the Mamelodi hostage standoff was ongoing. Residents of the area have been advised to avoid the Buffer Zone to allow negotiators and tactical teams space to work.

Authorities have confirmed that updates will be provided once there is progress in negotiations or any changes to the safety of the hostages.
