A suspect has been arrested after killing two people and wounding six others with a large kitchen knife along the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada, on Thursday, 6 October 2022.
Two dead and six injured in Las Vegas strip stabbing: Here’s what we know
As reported by Fox5, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has identified the suspect as Yoni Borris. The 32-year-old has been charged with two counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.
Police say they started receiving 911 calls about the stabbings around 11:40, on the north end of the Strip. Consequently, three people were hospitalised in critical condition, and another three were in stable condition.
Some of the victims appeared to be showgirls who posed for photos with tourists on the Strip. Boris told a woman that he was a chef who wanted to take a picture with some of the showgirls with his knife, but he started stabbing people when the group declined the man’s offer. After the first stabbing, the suspect walked down the sidewalk and attacked the other victims.
Shortly after police were called, Borris fled the scene. Police recovered the “large knife with a long blade” believed to have been used.
The stabbings took place at the intersection of Sands Avenue, near the Palazzo hotel-casino and across the street from the Wynn.
However, no information regarding Borris’ motive has been made public yet.
Police advised people to avoid the area as they searched for additional victims. Further, authorities closed off the road and told the public to avoid the area.
The governor of Las Vegas, Steve Sisolak, has since released a statement on his Twitter account.
“Our hearts are with all those affected by this tragedy. At the State level, we will continue to work with partners in law enforcement to make resources available on the ground and ensure the Las Vegas Strip remains a safe and welcoming place for all to visit,” Sisolak wrote.
