Eskom substation security guards survive horror encounter
The attack on the security officers unfolded just after midnight when they returned to their post at the Eskom Substation in Nkowankowa Section A.
According to a statement issued by Limpopo police, the officers were waiting for their colleagues to open the gate when they suddenly heard a gunshot.
“Two armed suspects emerged from the darkness, and one of them broke the passenger window using the firearm,” said the police.
The assailants pointed firearms at the security officers, demanding their service weapons and cellphones. They managed to take one firearm and rob the victims of their cellphones.
During the assault, the officers’ colleagues opened the gate.
One colleague, realising the danger, managed to escape. The suspects forced the remaining three officers to enter the premises and locked them inside the guardroom.
The suspects then fled the scene in the company vehicle, which was later found abandoned a few kilometres away.
The victims managed to break the guardroom windows and notify the police.
Police have registered cases of carjacking and robbery with a firearm.
“We urge members of the public who may have information that could assist in the apprehension of the suspects to come forward,” the police statement added.
The manhunt for the suspects is ongoing, with authorities following all available leads.
