Three suspects have been arrested, and they are expected to appear in court on Monday, 7 October 2024.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu confirmed the arrests during a memorial service held for the victims.
“We are not too far from arresting the fourth person linked to the mass murders in Lusikisiki. The three that have been arrested will be appearing in court tomorrow. We will not leave any stone unturned until all those involved in this mass murder are arrested,” Mchunu said.
The victims were ambushed by heavily armed attackers while preparing for a traditional ceremony in the early hours of Saturday morning, 28 September 2024.
The youngest victim was a 14-year-old boy. The motive behind the attack is still unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
Memorial service and funeral plans for the victims
A mass memorial service for the 18 victims took place on Sunday, attended by family members, government officials, and community leaders.
Eastern Cape Premier spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie explained that after the memorial, each family would hold private funerals on separate dates in line with their traditional practices.
Rantjie said:
“The provincial government, with the support of businesses, will provide material assistance to the families to ensure that their loved ones are laid to rest with dignity.”
The government’s support includes coffins, logistics, and groceries to assist the families during this difficult time.
Funerals are expected to take place over the weekend of 12 and 13 October 2024, allowing each family to pay their respects privately.
