A 34-year-old suspect, believed to be part of a kidnapping syndicate operating in the Western Cape, was arrested on Thursday, 5 September 2024.
Suspect due in court for kidnapping Cape Town family
This comes after a Cape Town family was abducted on Saturday, 24 August 2024, and later rescued by a specialised Anti-Kidnapping Task Team the following day.
According to police, the victims, a family of four, were en route from Kuils River to Helderstroom Prison in Caledon, where the father is employed as a prison warden.
Their vehicle was later found abandoned in Endlovini, Khayelitsha.
The kidnappers demanded a ransom of R100,000 per person, totalling R400,000, with strict instructions to the family’s brother not to involve the police.
Fortunately, the hostages were rescued the next day at around 04:30 near Philippi East.
They were spotted by a local police vehicle, which transported them safely to the Kuils River police station.
The suspect is set to appear in the Paarl Magistrate Court on Monday, 9 September 2024, with further arrests expected as investigations continue.
