Authorities in Nevada have confirmed that a possible Burning Man homicide is under investigation after the body of an unidentified man was discovered at the annual festival.
Body found during Burning Man festival
According to US media reports, the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said the body was found on Saturday night, 30 August 2025, around 21:14 PT (Sunday, 31 August at 06:14 SAST).
A festival participant alerted a deputy that a man was “lying in a pool of blood” during the traditional burning of the giant wooden effigy known as “the Man.”
What police have confirmed so far
Sheriff’s deputies said the body belonged to a white adult male, but his identity has not yet been released. The body was transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.
The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as “a singular crime,” meaning they believe it was an isolated case rather than part of a larger threat. However, they urged all festivalgoers to remain cautious and aware of their surroundings.
Local law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Land Management and Black Rock Rangers, worked together to secure the scene, collect evidence, and interview witnesses.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office declined to provide further comment over the phone.
Burning Man organisers respond
In a statement, Burning Man organisers confirmed they were cooperating fully with law enforcement. The official Burning Man Journal also published a message saying:
“The safety and well-being of our community are paramount.”
Organisers reminded attendees still at the festival that support was available 24/7.
This includes help from Black Rock Rangers, who act as community safety volunteers, and the Emergency Services Department’s Crisis Support Team, which provides medical and emotional assistance.
What is Burning Man?
Burning Man is a week-long arts and community festival held every year in the Nevada desert. It takes place in a temporary city called Black Rock City, built by participants for the event.
The highlight of the festival is the burning of a giant wooden effigy known as “the Man.” In 2025, more than 70,000 people were expected to attend.
While the event is famous for its music, art, and performances, it has also faced challenges in the past, including extreme weather, accidents, and deaths. In 2024 alone, more than 102,000 people attended regional Burning Man events across 20 countries.
