New York City is on tenterhooks with a sharp rise in public shootings. On Sunday morning, authorities were summoned to the scene of the latest incident, this time, at a popular restaurant in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn mass shooting: Police confirm killers are still at large

According to reports, NYPD officers were called out to Taste of the City, a lounge situated near the gentrified Prospect Heights, at approximately 03:30 EST (09:30 SAST), after several gunshots rang out from inside the establishment.

In a press briefing, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish confirmed that the mass shooting culminated in the deaths of three victims, with eight others in hospital, some being treated for minor wounds while an unconfirmed tally’s condition is much more serious.

Early on in the investigation, authorities could only confirm that a group of suspects were involved in the incident and that CCTV footage will aid detectives in not only piecing together the moments leading up to the shooting, but also in identifying those responsible.

Apart from the surveillance footage, authorities also managed to recover a firearm near the venue, along with at least 36 shell casings from the crime scene.

Sunday’s shooting occurs exactly a week after three people were injured in a shooting at New York’s Times Square.

A 17-year-old was taken into custody for the incident which, according to reports, was sparked by a fight outside a Raising Cane’s chicken restaurant.

In late July, a Las Vegas native Shane Tamura made international headlines when on 29 July 2025 entered 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan armed with an AR-15-style rifle, intending to reach the NFL’s headquarters. However, he mistakenly took the wrong elevator and instead accessed the 33rd floor occupied by the property’s management company.

The 27-year-old casino worker and former high school football player killed four people before turning the gun on himself.

“We have the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year we’ve seen on record in the city of New York. Something like this is, of course, thank God, an anomaly and it’s a terrible thing that’s happened this morning,” Tish told reporters.
