The two-week search for a missing Soweto couple ended in tragedy after their bodies were found inside a submerged vehicle in the Klip River near a popular bus stop on Wednesday.
Search for Soweto couple ends in horror
The couple, who were last seen on Sunday, 2 February 2025, were discovered in their white Hyundai i10, which was located in a stream along Chris Hani Road, near the Lakeview Rea Vaya Bus Station in Mofolo South, Soweto.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened to determine how the vehicle ended up in the river.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after reports that a car had been spotted underwater. Upon retrieving the vehicle, two bodies were discovered inside.
Authorities say it remains unclear how long the car had been submerged or how it ended up in the river. The area is known for flooding during heavy rains, but investigators are considering all possibilities, including accidental drowning and foul play.
Some family members of the victims arrived at the scene, visibly shaken by the discovery. The couple had been reported missing earlier this month, with loved ones desperately searching for answers.
At this stage, police do not have clear answers on how the couple’s vehicle ended up in the river. Gauteng police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Masondo stated:
“It is not clear at this stage how the vehicle landed in the river. Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation to please call the nearest police station or contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.”
The Klip River has been the site of previous drownings and incidents, including a case in November 2023, where two people were washed away during a cleansing ritual.
Authorities will be looking into all possibilities as they continue their investigation into this latest incident.
