Starting Tuesday, 6 February 2024, several areas in Cape Town will experience water restrictions faster than you can say “Where’s my shower bucket?”

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is rolling up its sleeves for some much-needed TLC on our water supply infrastructure.
While the intention is to benefit customers, the immediate effect might feel more like a dry spell.
On Tuesday, Oakdale, Blommendal, Blomtuin, Eikenbosch, and Chrismar won’t just be missing vowels in their names; they’ll be missing water from 10:00 to 16:00.
Wednesday sees Capri dry from 10:00 to 14:00, and the waterworks drama returns to Blommendal and Blomtuin, extending their cameo in this saga from 10:00 to 16:00.
Not to be left out, Strand will have its water supply shut off for a meter installation, and Upper Newlands and Rondebosch are also on the maintenance hit list, facing disruptions and pressure fluctuations.
So, how does one prepare for a waterless existence, albeit temporary?
Firstly, don’t panic. It’s not the apocalypse, just very inconvenient maintenance.
Store water like a squirrel stores nuts for winter — in clean, sealed containers. Keep your taps closed tighter than your secrets to prevent water loss or damage when the supply magically reappears.
And if the water looks a bit funky once it’s back, give it a moment. It’s just aerated, not contaminated.
The City has apologised for any inconvenience caused, which is a polite way of saying, “Sorry for the dry skin and dirty dishes in advance.”
This critical work includes zero-pressure tests and conditional assessments, ensuring our taps don’t do a vanishing act in the future.
These measures are part of the City’s grand plan to manage our water demand more effectively, aiming to reduce pipe bursts and water wastage.
