Watch: Rick Ross convinced he spotted a whale in Cape Town

Ross touched down in Cape Town on Monday, 13 January 2025, and his escapades in the Mother City began immediately. A now-viral video circulating on social media shows Ross excitedly stopping his ride en route from the airport to his hotel.

In the video, Ross claims to have spotted a whale in the waters near Clifton Beach.

He urged the driver to pull over, hoping to capture the majestic marine mammal on camera. Although some in the car doubted his sighting, his claims were validated by a tour guide who confirmed that whale sightings in Clifton during this time of year are not uncommon.

Cape Town is known for its vibrant marine life, and the southern right whale is often seen along its shores from July to November.

While the season for southern right whales has passed, it is possible that Ross spotted a late traveller or another marine species, such as a humpback whale, which can be seen year-round.

Ross’s carefree Cape Town adventure didn’t stop at whale spotting. Another video circulating online shows the rapper smoking marijuana while enjoying the scenic views of Clifton Beach.

While marijuana has been decriminalised for private use in South Africa since 2018, Cape Town’s municipal by-laws still prohibit smoking cannabis in public.

Ross’s visit to Cape Town appears to be unofficial, as no scheduled performances or business engagements have been announced. The rapper has been sharing glimpses of his stay at a luxury hotel in Camps Bay, known for its breathtaking ocean views and high-end accommodations.

This is not Ross’s first time in South Africa. In 2015, he performed at a sold-out show in Johannesburg, thrilling fans with his biggest hits. He returned in 2019 for a private event, where he spoke highly of the country’s culture and hospitality.
