Firefighters from the City of Cape Town remain hard at work on Table Mountain as they battle the wildfire that began on Friday in Tokai.
What’s the latest with the Tokai fire?
By early Monday morning, officials confirmed that there were no major flare-ups during the night.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, said helicopters will take flight later in the day after a fresh assessment of the fire. He confirmed that a female firefighter was injured while working on the fire line and had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
Carelse explained that crews managed to keep the fire from reaching homes in areas like Clovelly and Noordhoek during the night.
Firefighters stayed on duty throughout, especially along Boyes Drive, Kalk Bay, and Fish Hoek, while also tackling flames moving towards Noordhoek from the Ou Kaapse Weg side.
To manage the situation better, an Incident Management Team Type 3 has been activated. This team will work in 12-hour shifts to give stronger control and support to firefighting efforts.
The public is being asked to stay away from all affected areas for their own safety and to allow firefighters and emergency services to operate without obstruction.
Road closures on Monday, 28 April 2025
Road closures remain in effect around parts of the South Peninsula as a safety measure due to the mountain fires.
Motorists are advised to avoid the following roads:
- Main Road and Boyes Drive
- Main Road, Lakeside
- Main Road and Clairvaux intersection
- Noordhoek and Old Kaapse Weg/Boyes Drive intersection
- Steenberg Road and Tokai Road near the Circle
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and traffic police are helping to manage road closures. These closures may be updated depending on how the fire progresses during the day.
Residents in high-risk areas such as Noordhoek Manor, Barnyard, and Silwersteen had to be evacuated as a precaution. Disaster Risk Management officials helped move 198 households, including 48 frail care residents, to safety over the weekend.
How to make donations toward Tokai fire
The community has been incredibly supportive, and donations are still very much needed.
Anyone who wishes to assist the firefighters on the ground can drop off the following items:
- Bottled water
- Energy drinks
- Energy bars
- Non-perishable food items
All donations can be delivered to the Lakeside Fire Station. These contributions help keep the firefighting teams energised and supported as they continue to work through long and challenging hours.
City officials expressed their gratitude for the generosity shown so far and assured the public that all donated goods are being packed and sent up to the crews as quickly as possible.
