Tragically, one individual lost their life in the accident, while four others sustained minor injuries.

This accident comes amid recent data from Cape Town’s Public Emergency Communication Centre, which indicated a slight decrease in motor vehicle and pedestrian-vehicle accidents week-on-week.
On Sunday, 17 September 2023, Cape Town metro police officers conducted a roadblock at the corner of Spine and Ntlazane Roads in Khayelitsha.
During this operation, officers arrested eight motorists, aged between 25 and 43, for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The recorded alcohol readings ranged from 0.43mg/l to 0.89mg/l. These motorists were subsequently detained at Lingelethu West and Harare South African Police Stations.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, commented on the statistics derived from the Public Emergency Communication Centre, noting that they provide valuable insights into the city’s ongoing challenges.
Smith acknowledged that recent weather conditions contributed to an increase in motor vehicle accidents.
He expressed concern about rising cases of assault and emphasised that proactive policing could only partially address interpersonal violence, which remains a persistent issue in the community.
