Beaufort West, a historic municipality often regarded as the “Capital of the Karoo,” is facing the possibility of a name change.
The mayor, Ashley Sauls I, has introduced a proposal to rename the municipality as part of a broader initiative aimed at “rebranding, restoring, and repositioning” the region.
Beaufort West history and its strong links to colonialism
Understanding the historical significance of this municipality provides crucial context for the proposed name change.
Beaufort West is situated in the heart of the Great Karoo, a vast and arid region in South Africa. Its history is deeply intertwined with the broader narrative of the country.
Beaufort West owes its establishment to the early 19th century when European settlers, primarily of Dutch and British descent, began to move into the interior of South Africa.
The town was founded in 1818 and named after Henry Somerset, the 5th Duke of Beaufort, who was then the British Colonial Secretary. It served as a crucial outpost on the route connecting Cape Town to the hinterlands.
Beaufort West played a vital role during the Great Trek, a historical event in the mid-19th century where Boer pioneers moved inland to escape British colonial rule.
This period marked a significant chapter in South African history, as it contributed to the establishment of Boer republics and the shaping of the nation’s cultural identity.
The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century further boosted Beaufort West’s importance. It became a key railway junction, connecting various parts of the country and facilitating trade and transportation.
This development significantly influenced the town’s growth and economic prosperity.
Dubai West name proposal receives backlash
Mayor Ashley Sauls I’s proposal to rename the municipality “Dubai West” is part of a broader effort to modernise and revitalise the region.
Sauls, during a motion hearing on Tuesday, 29 August 2023, emphasised that the intention is not to erase the historical and cultural significance of Beaufort West but rather to create a name that better encompasses all four constituent towns within the municipality.
“Effective branding will position Beaufort West as a stand-out destination, enticing tourists from around the world. By addressing the physical, cultural and economic aspects of the municipality, a revitalised Beaufort West will emerge as a vibrant destination, offering a multitude of opportunities for both residents and visitors,” Sauls highlighted.
The proposal has sparked a range of opinions within the community.
Some residents view it as an opportunity to address historical disparities among the towns and promote inclusivity, while others express concerns about potentially losing the region’s unique historical identity.
