Shaune Mogaila is in police custody: What happens next?

The incident, involving his registered M2 BMW, resulted in the death of a nine-year-old girl. The girl’s mother and 13-year-old sibling were also injured and had to be extricated by emergency personnel after being trapped in the wreckage.

Mogaila is expected to appear in court on Thursday, facing charges of culpable homicide, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed that when police arrived at the scene, they found the abandoned vehicle with bottles of alcohol, a white powder suspected to be cocaine, and marijuana edibles inside.

The discovery has raised questions about the events leading up to the accident.

Although it remains unconfirmed whether Mogaila was driving, the abandoned car and its contents point to circumstances that could intensify his legal troubles.

This case comes at a crucial moment for Mogaila, whose role in Sekhukhune United’s recent DStv Premiership victory over Richards Bay was pivotal.

Just a day before the incident, he played a significant part in the team’s winning effort, with goals by teammates Babina Noko in the 70th minute and Sipho Mbule in the 89th minute sealing the victory.

Now, however, the soccer star finds himself on uncertain ground, facing a potentially lengthy and consequential legal process that could jeopardise his career if convicted.

Sekhukhune United have yet to issue a statement in response to the situation.
