Mamelodi Sundowns have secured their eighth consecutive DStv Premiership title, making them the first football club in South African history to win the league eight times in a row. The Pretoria-based team achieved this after defeating Chippa United 3-0 at Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Wednesday night, 14 May 2025.

The match that sealed the title was decisive. Sundowns opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the game. Iqraam Rayners scored the first goal, positioning himself well in the penalty box before striking the ball into the top corner of the net.
Despite several missed chances in the first half—including attempts by Lucas Ribeiro—the team maintained a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, both teams created opportunities. However, Sundowns remained in control. The second goal came in the 69th minute from Arthur Sales. It appeared to be a cross, but the ball hit the goalpost and went in. Later in the match, Sales scored again after intercepting a pass from Chippa United’s goalkeeper and tapping the ball into the net.
With this win, Sundowns completed a league double over Chippa United—meaning they beat the same team in both home and away matches during the season.
The 3-0 victory ensured that Sundowns would finish the season with more than 70 points, a milestone they have now reached for three seasons in a row.
Historical achievement in South African football
This is Sundowns’ 15th league title overall and their eighth in a row. No other football team in South Africa’s top division has ever achieved eight consecutive league titles.
The DStv Premiership is South Africa’s highest professional football league. It is played by 16 teams who compete throughout the season for the top position. Winning this league means a team was the best overall across the entire season.
Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns’ head coach from Portugal, also reached a personal milestone. He is the first non-South African coach in ten years to win the country’s top football title.
Sundowns will officially lift the Premiership trophy after their final game of the season against Magesi FC on Sunday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
The team’s lineup against Chippa included Ronwen Williams as captain, along with players such as Mosa Lebusa, Marcelo Allende, Teboho Mokoena, and Lucas Ribeiro.
Their consistent performance across the season has now been rewarded with a record-setting title run.
