Cape Town international Airport hit by power outage

Cape Town International Airport is experiencing intermittent power outages, with technicians working to restore services.

Cape Town International Airport is experiencing intermittent power interruptions, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) confirmed on Monday.

Power outage strikes again at Cape Town airport

The disruptions are affecting certain parts of the airport, but flight schedules remain largely unaffected, according to a statement issued on social media.

In a notice, ACSA stated:

“Please note that [CTIA] is currently experiencing intermittent power interruptions in certain parts of the airport. Our technicians are on-site and working on solving the problem. NO flights are impacted. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience.”

Despite the assurances that operations remain largely intact, at least one flight—FlySafair FA112 from Cape Town to Johannesburg—has been delayed.

This marks the second time in 2025 that Cape Town International Airport, one of South Africa’s busiest travel hubs, has been hit by power-related disruptions.

In January, a major outage caused by a damaged cable impacted multiple airport services, including refuelling and flight schedules. While backup generators were deployed, some flights faced delays while refuelling operations were restored.

The latest incident has reignited concerns about ACSA’s operational reliability.

The company has been under scrutiny following a series of infrastructure failures, including a fuel supply system malfunction at OR Tambo International Airport in December 2024, which resulted in widespread flight delays.

At the time, FlySafair criticised ACSA for what it described as “inadequate infrastructure maintenance” and was forced to issue refunds to affected passengers.

ACSA has also faced questions over its financial stability, with concerns that budget constraints may be affecting its ability to maintain essential airport infrastructure.

Technicians are currently working to restore power at Cape Town International Airport, and ACSA has promised to provide updates as the situation develops.
