X (Twitter) downvotes are reportedly coming soon

X is reportedly preparing to roll out a new downvote feature that may replace likes on posts or replies.

X, formerly known as Twitter, may soon introduce a new way for users to react to posts — by allowing them to downvote or upvote instead of simply liking.

X (Twitter) reportedly on the verge of launching downvotes

While the company has not made an official announcement yet, reports suggest that the change could be launched in the near future.

This new feature is expected to work similarly to voting systems seen on other social media platforms like Reddit. On Reddit, users vote content up or down based on whether they find it useful or not.

The idea is to help highlight better posts and replies while moving the less helpful or disliked ones lower down. It’s meant to improve the quality of online discussions.

The talk about X adding a downvote button started back in July 2024. At that time, researchers found signs of a new voting feature hidden in the app’s code. These clues showed buttons that looked like a broken heart next to the current heart-shaped “like” button. This suggested that the company might be introducing a way for users to dislike or downvote content directly.

The most recent updates found in X’s iPhone app include phrases such as “Do you want to downvote this post?” and “Downvote this post,” which further point to the feature being tested internally.

According to reverse engineer Aaron Perris, who often spots upcoming app changes before they go public, the new function might not just be limited to replies — it could apply to all posts on the platform. However, as of now, the feature appears to be limited to replies only.

Another X user, known as @P4mui, shared a video showing how the dislike button looks when enabled. In their post, they explained that the button was only active on replies, and even then, it was only visible through a special setting used by developers or staff.

Earlier versions of Twitter tested a similar concept in 2021, before Elon Musk took over the platform. Those tests included both upvote and downvote buttons for tweets, but they were never made available to all users.

The goal of the new feature seems to be focused on making conversations easier to follow. By letting people downvote unhelpful or annoying replies, X may be trying to make sure that the best answers appear at the top of the thread, and the worst are pushed lower.

It is not clear when exactly the feature will be released to the public. But based on the evidence in the app and the images shared by users, X may be closer than ever to rolling out this new voting system.

As always, the platform’s developer team is also updating other tools, including new ways for app creators to upload photos and videos more easily.

But for now, many users are watching closely to see when the dislike or downvote button will officially make its debut.
