Blood moon lunar eclipse: Time and date, significance, where to view it in South Africa

South Africa will witness a penumbral lunar eclipse on Friday, 14 March 2025, with the blood moon visible in select areas before moonset—here’s everything you need to know.

A total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “blood moon,” is set to occur between the evening of Thursday and the early hours of Friday, 14 March 14.

During this event, the Earth will align directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall upon the Moon and imparting it with a reddish hue.

This phenomenon results from Earth’s atmosphere filtering out shorter-wavelength blue light, allowing only the longer-wavelength red light to reach and illuminate the Moon’s surface.

No special equipment is necessary to view a penumbral lunar eclipse; the subtle dimming can be observed with the naked eye. However, using binoculars or a telescope may enhance the viewing experience by providing a clearer view of the Moon’s surface.

Blood moon lunar eclipse timing and visibility in South Africa

In South Africa, the eclipse will be partially visible as a penumbral lunar eclipse, where the Moon passes through Earth’s outer shadow, leading to a subtle dimming rather than a dramatic darkening.

The penumbral phase is expected to begin at approximately 05:57 SAST on Friday, 14 March 2025.

The maximum eclipse will occur around 06:33 SAST, with the penumbral phase concluding by 06:53 SAST.

However, since the Moon will set shortly after the maximum eclipse, the visibility window is limited.

Astrological vs Scientific significance of the blood moon lunar eclipse

Scientifically, a total lunar eclipse offers a unique opportunity to observe Earth’s shadow as it passes over the Moon.

The reddish colouration, characteristic of a “blood moon,” occurs because Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter-wavelength blue light, allowing the longer-wavelength red light to pass through and reach the Moon, NASA explains.

This same effect is responsible for the colours observed during sunrises and sunsets.

Astrologically, this particular lunar eclipse occurs in the zodiac sign of Virgo.

Astrologers suggest that such events can signify periods of transformation and introspection. They believe that a blood moon can act as a catalyst for change, encouraging individuals to reflect on their lives and consider necessary adjustments.

However, it’s important to note that these interpretations are not grounded in scientific evidence.
