PlayStation Network hit by global outage: Here’s what we know

PlayStation Network is experiencing a global outage, affecting online gaming, purchases, and account services. Here’s what we know so far.

PlayStation Network (PSN) has been experiencing a widespread outage since the early hours of Saturday, 8 February 2025.

PlayStation Network is down: Here’s what they reported

The disruption, which was first recorded at approximately 02:00 SAST, has affected account management, gaming services, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Video, leaving thousands of users unable to log in, play online games, or access digital content.

Sony acknowledged the issue through its official @AskPlayStation account, confirming:

“We are aware some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN. Our team is working to resolve this as soon as possible.”

According to Sony’s status page, the outage has disabled key features across all PlayStation platforms, including PS5, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and web-based services.

Gamers attempting to launch digital games, check their friends list, or redeem vouchers have reported persistent error messages.

What caused the outage?

As of now, Sony has not provided an official reason for the downtime.

The outage coincides with a surge in user complaints on Down Detector, where nearly 70,000 reports of PSN issues were logged at the peak of the disruption.

While no cyberattack or system failure has been confirmed, some users suspect that the outage may be linked to maintenance work or a server overload.

However, without an official statement from Sony, the exact cause remains unclear.

What services are affected?

The PSN outage has affected multiple services, including:

  • Account Management: Users are unable to sign in, edit account details, or create new accounts.
  • Gaming and Social Features: Online multiplayer, trophies and game streaming are currently down.
  • PlayStation Store: Purchases, downloads, browsing, and redeeming vouchers are unavailable.
  • PlayStation Video: Streaming content is inaccessible.

When will the PlayStation Network be back?

Sony has not provided a timeline for when full functionality will be restored. The company has assured users that they are actively working to fix the issue, but no estimated time of resolution has been shared.

For now, gamers are advised to monitor PlayStation’s official channels for real-time updates.
