Weather warnings issued for these parts of South Africa on Thursday, 6 June 2024
Impact-based warnings
Orange Level 5 Warning:
A severe storm surge will impact the coastline between Plettenberg Bay and Buffalo City.
This weather event will likely bring flooding to low-lying coastal areas, including estuaries, and significantly disrupt small harbours and ports.
Damage is also expected at beaches, dunes, and estuaries, with river banks upstream breaching under the force of the surge.
This high level of alert indicates a serious risk to life and property.
Yellow Level 2 Warnings:
- Disruptive Rain: The southwestern parts of the Western Cape will experience disruptive rain that leads to localised flooding. Roads could become hazardous, causing minor vehicle accidents due to slippery conditions and reduced visibility. The rain will particularly affect susceptible settlements.
- Damaging Winds and Waves: Damaging winds and waves are expected between Plettenberg Bay and East London. These conditions will make navigation at sea dangerous, especially for small vessels and personal watercraft. Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution and to avoid unnecessary sea travel during this period.
Fire danger warnings
Extremely High Fire Danger:
Several regions have been placed under fire danger warnings due to extremely high fire risk conditions.
The affected areas include :
- Modimolle Local Municipality in Limpopo;
- the eastern parts of the Free State;
- the North West; and

These regions could face a heightened risk of wildfires, and residents are urged to avoid any activities that could potentially ignite fires.
