Widespread instability with rain, wind, and snow characterise the weather today across parts of South Africa
Weather warnings issued for Sunday, 6 July 2025
Weather today across South Africa is marked by turbulent and varied conditions as a potent weather system continues to impact several provinces.
While many central and northern areas will experience fine, cold weather, coastal and southern interior regions remain at the mercy of disruptive rainfall, wind, and snowfall.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has maintained multiple warnings, particularly for the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, signalling a day of caution and heightened weather vigilance.
In the northern provinces, including Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, residents can expect relatively stable weather.
Clear skies prevail in Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Polokwane, with temperatures ranging from the low single digits to the low 20s Celsius.
Despite the sun, a high UVB index warrants protective measures against ultraviolet radiation.
Elsewhere, the central and northern regions such as Mahikeng, Vryburg, Bloemfontein, and Kimberley, remain windy and cold, with isolated showers noted in the Free State and Northern Cape.
By contrast, the Western Cape, particularly the City of Cape Town, Cape Winelands, West Coast, and Overberg Districts, are forecast to receive widespread showers and rain, continuing the hazardous conditions initiated by a deep frontal system.
The Eastern Cape and surrounding marine zones also remain under scrutiny, with several warnings in effect.
- Yellow Level 4: Disruptive Rainfall – A serious alert for the City of Cape Town, Cape Winelands, West Coast, and Overberg. Heavy rain poses a risk of flooding, especially at low-lying bridges and roads, increasing danger to life and infrastructure.
- Yellow Level 2: Damaging Waves – Expected between Cape Agulhas and East London, affecting maritime operations and potentially endangering small vessels.
- Yellow Level 2: Damaging Winds – Anticipated between Plettenberg Bay and East London, posing risks to small vessels and navigation at sea.
- Yellow Level 2: Disruptive Snow – Forecast over the northern high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape, possibly rendering some streams inaccessible and threatening vulnerable livestock and crops.
Fire Danger Warning
Extremely high fire danger conditions are reported in the extreme south-eastern parts of Limpopo.
Advisories
Very cold morning conditions are expected in parts of the Northern Cape, North West, and Free State, adding further discomfort to exposed communities.
