Weather warnings and advisories for Monday, 19 May 2025

Based on the latest forecast from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), here are the key weather warnings and advisories for Monday, 19 May 2025:

  • Fire Danger Warning:
    • Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Beaufort West Municipality in the Western Cape.
  • Advance Impact-Based Warnings (Valid for Tuesday & Wednesday, 20–21 May 2025):
    • Yellow Level 2 Warning – Damaging Winds and Waves between Alexander Bay and Cape Agulhas, spreading to Plettenberg Bay, causing difficulty in sea navigation and disruptions in harbours and ports.
    • Yellow Level 2 Warning – Damaging Interior Winds across the Northern Cape, Central Karoo (Western Cape), and several municipalities in the Eastern Cape, leading to hazardous travel conditions and possible infrastructure disruptions.
    • Yellow Level 2 Warning – Disruptive Rainfall over parts of the Western Cape, potentially causing localised flooding in formal and informal settlements and roads.

Western Cape cold fronts

A cold front is expected to move through the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Eastern Cape between Tuesday and Wednesday (20–21 May 2025), ushering in very cold, wet, and windy conditions. According to SAWS, two cold fronts are anticipated within a 48-hour window, with the first being relatively mild.

Prolonged rainfall may result in localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage in the Western Cape. Inland regions of the three affected provinces are likely to experience strong winds reaching up to 65 km/h. These conditions are expected to lead to a sharp drop in temperatures and pose maritime risks, with rough seas threatening the safety of small vessels and coastal operations.

Motorists are advised to be cautious, as the strong winds may disrupt road travel and pose dangers to high-profile vehicles on national routes. Additionally, the possibility of damage to power infrastructure cannot be ruled out.
