SASSA deadline for Postbank black card swap extended: Here’s everything you must know

SASSA has extended the deadline for beneficiaries to switch from the Gold Card to the Postbank Black Card.

The deadline for South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries to swap their Gold Cards for the new Postbank Black Card has been extended from 28 February to 20 March 2025.

What you must know about the new SASSA deadline

This announcement was made by Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi and Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe in a joint statement.

Officials cited concerns from grant recipients and logistical challenges as the reason for the extension. Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA’s spokesperson, stated that only one million beneficiaries out of 3.5 million have upgraded so far. He further warned that those who fail to switch by the deadline will experience inconveniences, even though their grants will still be paid.

The Postbank Black Card upgrade follows reports that the security features of the Gold Card have been compromised.

While the exact nature of the breaches has not been disclosed, authorities insist that the new card will provide enhanced security and efficiency for social grant payments.

Government officials have reassured beneficiaries that grant payments will continue as usual. However, those who do not switch before 20 March will need to visit Post Office branches in person to access their funds until they obtain the new card.

Where and how to switch to the Postbank Black Card

Beneficiaries can swap their old SASSA Gold Cards for the Postbank Black Cards at the following locations:

  • Postbank Branches – Visit the nearest branch with a valid South African ID and proof of residence.
  • Designated Retailers – Postbank has partnered with select supermarkets and retail chains to facilitate the process.
  • Mobile Offices – Special mobile units will be deployed to assist grant recipients in rural and remote areas.

To avoid delays, beneficiaries are encouraged to make the switch as soon as possible.

Government departments are working with community leaders and local authorities to ensure clear communication and assistance where needed.

Postbank and SASSA will continue to monitor the card swap process and provide updates as necessary.

While the 20 March deadline marks the date when the SASSA Gold Card will stop working, beneficiaries will still be able to apply for the Postbank Black Card after this date.
