1. SASSA grant increases effective from May 2025

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed during his Budget Speech that R284.7 billion has been allocated for permanent social grants for the 2025/26 financial year.

As a result, the following increases are effective from May 2025:

  • Older Persons (60–74) and Disability Grants: Increased by R130 to R2,315
  • Older Persons (75+) Grant: Increased by R135 to R2,335

  • Foster Care Grant: Increased by R70 to R1,250

These increases aim to support vulnerable South Africans facing rising living costs.

2. Postbank Black Card access and collection methods

SASSA beneficiaries who have transitioned to the Postbank Black Card are encouraged to access their funds through:

  • ATMs
  • Retailers including Shoprite, Usave, Boxer, Spar, Pick n Pay, and Checkers

Important Note:

Beneficiaries with the Black Card will not be assisted at South African Post Office branches. This is part of the ongoing migration to the more secure Postbank Black Card.

Those who have not yet made the switch from the SASSA Gold Card will still be able to access their money through Post Office branches or retail till points during April and May 2025.

Postbank will continue to offer card swaps until the end of June 2025.

3. No grants will be stopped in May

SASSA has dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that the Older Persons Grant will be cancelled in May if certain documents aren’t updated.

In an official statement, SASSA National Spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi clarified:

“No grant will be cancelled. The message is incorrect and fake… Only grants scheduled for review are affected, and beneficiaries are informed in advance.”

Beneficiaries are urged to rely only on official SASSA communication channels and avoid sharing unverified social media posts that could cause confusion or distress.
