Latest SASSA updates you must know about

1. Updated Grant Amounts as of May 2025

Following the Finance Minister’s announcement of a R387.3 billion social grants budget for 2025/26, several grant increases took effect in May 2025. These are:

  • Older Persons (60–74), Disability, War Veterans, and Care Dependency Grants: R2,315
  • Older Persons (75+) Grant: R2,335
  • Foster Care Grant: R1,250
  • Child Support Grant: R560

These adjustments include a R90 increase in April and a further R10 planned for October 2025, totalling R100 for most major grants this year.

2. Postbank Card Transition and Grant Access Locations

The Postbank Black Card has replaced the older SASSA Gold Card, which ceased functionality after the June 2025 extension deadline.

  • Beneficiaries with the Black Card: Access grants at ATMs and retailers like Shoprite, Usave, Boxer, Spar, Pick n Pay, and Checkers.
  • Beneficiaries without the new card: Can still collect funds from Post Office branches or retail till points, but only until the end of June.

Postbank has reiterated that Post Office branches will not serve Black Card holders.

3. Grant Payment Delays for Beneficiaries with Undisclosed Income

In a media statement issued on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, SASSA announced that approximately 210,000 beneficiaries may experience delayed June payments due to undisclosed income.

These individuals were flagged through collaboration with registered Credit Bureaus. In line with the Social Assistance Act, grant recipients are required to:

  • Disclose all income at application, and
  • Update SASSA on any changes in financial circumstances.

Affected beneficiaries must visit a SASSA office within 30 days to review their grant status. Failure to comply may lead to suspension or permanent cancellation of grants.

The measure is part of a broader effort to eliminate inclusion errors and ensure that only eligible individuals receive social assistance.

4. SASSA’s Stance on Fraud and Fake Messages

SASSA has recently addressed false social media claims suggesting grants will be stopped if documents are not updated. These messages are confirmed as fake.

“We urge our beneficiaries to rely on credible information from our official channels,” said SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi.

The agency reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy on fraud, and warns that any officials found colluding with beneficiaries to exploit the system will face disciplinary and legal action.
