SASSA has confirmed the April 2025 payment dates, introduced grant increases, and announced the discontinuation of Gold Cards, requiring beneficiaries to switch to the Postbank Black Card.

SASSA has released the official payment schedule for April 2025, along with updates on grant increases and changes affecting beneficiaries using the SASSA Gold Card.

What are the SASSA and SRD grant payment dates for April 2025?

The payment dates for SASSA grants in April 2025 are as follows:

  • Older Persons Grants: Thursday, 3 April 2025
  • Disability Grants: Friday, 4 April 2025
  • Children’s Grants and all other grants: Saturday, 5 April 2025

SASSA has confirmed that payments will be made through the allocated methods in its system. Beneficiaries are reminded to ensure their banking details and payment preferences are up to date to avoid any disruptions.

For Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant recipients, payments will be made between 25 April 2025 and 30 April 2025. The SRD grant remains at R370 per recipient.

Beneficiaries experiencing card issues or expired cards are encouraged to resolve them as soon as possible to avoid payment delays.

1. SASSA Grant Increases Effective from April 2025

During his Budget Speech earlier this month, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a National Treasury allocation of R284.7 billion for permanent social grants in the 2025/26 financial year.

This allocation allows for the following increases to take effect from April 2025:

  • Older Persons (60-74 years) and Disability Grants: Increased by R130 to R2,315
  • Older Persons (75+ years) Grant: Increased by R135 to R2,335
  • War Veterans Grant: Increased by R130 to R2,315
  • Care Dependency Grant: Increased by R130 to R2,315
  • Child Support Grant: Increased by R30 to R560
  • Foster Care Grant: Increased by R70 to R1,250

2. What Happens to SASSA Gold Cards After the 20 March 2025 Deadline?

The 20 March 2025 deadline for SASSA Gold Cardholders to switch to the new Postbank Black Card has now passed. Beneficiaries who missed the deadline will face the following restrictions:

  • Gold Cards are no longer valid for transactions, even if funds remain in the account.
  • Withdrawals and purchases will not be possible using the Gold Card at retailers or ATMs.
  • Any attempt to use the Gold Card at an ATM could result in the card being swallowed.
  • Retailers will no longer accept Gold Cards for any form of payment.

Despite these restrictions, Postbank will continue swapping Gold Cards for Black Cards until the end of June 2025.

Beneficiaries who have not yet migrated are urged to do so as soon as possible.

3. Where to Access Your Grant Payment Without a Postbank Black Card

Postbank spokesperson Bongani Dikeo confirmed that grant recipients who have not switched to the Postbank Black Card can still collect their payments.

However, they will have limited access to their money.

Where to withdraw funds without a Black Card:

  • South African Post Office branches (April and May only)
  • Retailers’ till points offering cash withdrawals

4. Where to Access Grants with a Postbank Black Card

Beneficiaries who already have the Postbank Black Card can withdraw or use their grant at the following locations:

  • ATMs nationwide
  • Retailers accepting Postbank Black Cards:
  • Shoprite
  • Usave
  • Boxer
  • Spar
  • Pick n Pay
  • Checkers

Notably, Post Office branches will not assist beneficiaries with Black Cards. Those with the new card should use ATMs or partner retailers instead.
