Reddersberg N6 accident leaves 10 dead, more than 30 injured

A bus and truck collision on the N6 near Reddersburg has left 10 people dead and more than 30 injured, with emergency services attending to the scene.

A fatal collision between a bus and a truck on the N6 highway has resulted in 10 deaths and at least 31 injuries.

The crash took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, about 15 kilometres south of Reddersburg, disrupting traffic on the route toward Smithfield.

Authorities were alerted to the accident at 03:50. Emergency services and law enforcement swiftly responded, transporting seven individuals with moderate to severe injuries to various hospitals.

According to Chairperson of the Free State Road Incident Management System (RIMS) and District Manager of EMS Communications Sipho Towa, the majority of those who lost their lives were adult females, with one minor among the deceased.

The initial fatality count was estimated at five but later confirmed to be 10 as emergency teams assessed the scene.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.

The accident resulted in a complete closure of the N6 in the affected area, forcing traffic diversions.

Towa provided alternative routes for travellers:

  • Motorists travelling from Reddersburg must take the R717 to Edenburg (27 km), continue on the N1 to Springfontein (69.5 km), and then proceed via the R715 to Smithfield (103 km), reconnecting with the N6.
  • Those coming from Smithfield are advised to use the R715 to Springfontein and then take the N1 to Bloemfontein, covering approximately 140 km.

Authorities continue to manage the accident scene, provide medical assistance, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
