Residents in Hammanskraal are being urged to prepare for a 10-hour water outage scheduled for Wednesday, 21 May 2025.
Hammanskraal 10-hour water outage: Here’s what you must know
This planned disruption is necessary to allow maintenance work at the Temba Water Purification Plant, where technicians will clean Reservoir Number 3.
The maintenance will start at 07:00 in the morning and is expected to finish by 17:00 in the evening. During this time, water supply may be interrupted in several areas.
These include:
- Dilopye
- Hammanskraal West
- Kanana
- Lephengville
- Majaneng
- Renstown
- Sekampaneng
- Suurman
- Manyeleti
- Units 5, 7, and D
According to the City of Tshwane, the reservoirs at the plant will be filled before the shutdown to help reduce the impact of the outage. However, the City has warned that water pressure may be low or water might run out completely if residents do not use it wisely.
“The city sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered as a result of this planned maintenance. Therefore, consumers are requested to use water sparingly during this time to prevent the other storage facilities from running dry,” City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo stated.
This is the second time in two months that Hammanskraal has faced a 10-hour water outage.
In March 2025, a similar shutdown took place to allow repairs on a pump station and water system linked to the same purification plant. Many of the same areas were affected during that maintenance period.
The City of Tshwane continues to face challenges with providing a steady water supply.
One of the ongoing problems is the need for frequent maintenance on old or overstretched infrastructure, such as reservoirs, pump stations, and pipelines.
These are important parts of the water system because they store, pump, and carry water to homes and businesses.
In addition to the current outage, the City is preparing for another large-scale water supply disruption between 29 May and 3 June 2025.
That outage will be caused by Rand Water’s planned upgrades at the Mapleton and Palmiet Booster Pumping Stations. These upgrades involve connecting a new pipeline to boost supply from the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.
Residents are once again urged to conserve water. The City recommends practical steps like not watering gardens, washing cars, or filling swimming pools during this period.
People are also encouraged to turn off taps when brushing teeth and to only flush toilets when absolutely necessary.
