Gautrain launches initiative to slash prices by 50%

The initiative offers a 50% discount on Gautrain train faresand was officially launched by Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela.

KlevaMova is designed for students, pensioners, people with disabilities, and low-income households earning R350,000 or less per year before deductions. According to the Gautrain Management Agency, the move is part of a broader effort to ease the financial pressure on daily commuters and expand access to public transport across Gauteng.

“This initiative aims to ease the financial burden of travel,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela during the announcement.

The program is expected to help commuters who rely on the Gautrain as their main form of transportation but struggle with the cost of regular travel.

The 50% discount applies only to Gautrain train fares. Importantly, it does not apply to Gautrain buses, midi-bus services, parking fees, or trips to and from OR Tambo International Airport.

What’s in the fine print?

To benefit from the discounted rates, applicants must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Employees with a combined household income of R350,000 or less annually
  • People living with disabilities, with an income up to R600,000 annually
  • Pensioners
  • Scholars (under 18), with applications made by a parent or guardian

Applicants need to provide specific documents depending on their category. For workers, this includes a copy of an ID, a recent payslip, the latest three months’ bank statements, and proof of home and work addresses.

Alternatively, an official letter from an employer confirming the applicant’s income and addresses can be submitted.

People with disabilities must provide a copy of their ID along with official proof of disability—such as a SASSA card. Pensioners must submit a copy of their ID, while parents or guardians applying for a child need to provide both their ID and the child’s.

The discount is available through three specific ticket products:

  • Return Trip Product, valid for seven days between two selected stations
  • Weekly Product, offering 10 trips valid for 10 days
  • Monthly Product, offering 44 trips valid for 44 days

KlevaMova is now available to eligible individuals, with Gautrain encouraging applicants to take advantage of the offer as a way to improve their commuting experience while saving money.
