Eastern Cape snow disrupts roads: Here’s what you must know

Snowfall in the Eastern Cape has affected road travel, with at least one major route closed and several weather warnings issued for the region.

Heavy snowfall has hit parts of the Eastern Cape, disrupting traffic and leading to road closures on Monday, 9 June 2025.

The Eastern Cape Transport Department has confirmed that several routes are being closely monitored, while at least one major road has been shut down.

According to department spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the Wapadsberg Pass on the R61, which connects Nxuba (Cradock) and Graaff-Reinet, is still open.

However, drivers are being urged to use the road only if absolutely necessary.

“Motorists are urged to use that road only if they really need to, and in doing that, proceed with caution,” said Binqose.

The road surface in the area is covered with snow, creating slippery and dangerous driving conditions. Snow can make roads difficult to see and reduce tire grip, increasing the risk of accidents.

Meanwhile, the N6 route between Komani (formerly Queenstown) and Cathcart has been completely closed.

This is not due to snow but because of a truck accident that spilled hazardous chemicals on the road. Officials have stated that this section will remain closed for some time.

Elsewhere, mountain passes are also under close observation, with transport authorities monitoring the situation as weather conditions develop.

SAWS weather warnings for today

In addition to the snow, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several weather warnings for Monday:

  • Yellow Level 6 Warning for disruptive snow is in effect for the Joe Gqabi District, affecting towns like Molteno and Matatiele. This level indicates a serious risk of travel delays and road closures.
  • An Orange Level 6 Warning for disruptive rain has been issued for areas including the Amathole and OR Tambo Districts, and the Buffalo City Metro. This kind of warning means there is a real danger to life due to flooding.
  • Other warnings include:
    • Orange Level 5 rain warning in Alfred Nzo District and municipalities such as Makana and Ndlambe.
    • Yellow Level 2 warnings for snow in areas like Graaff-Reinet and Amahlati.
    • Yellow Level 2 warnings for damaging waves between Saldanha Bay and Plettenberg Bay.
    • Yellow Level 2 warnings for thunderstorms in southern and eastern KwaZulu-Natal.

The SAWS has also issued an advance alert for Tuesday, 10 June, warning of disruptive snow in the high-lying western areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

This includes possible road closures and dangers to farm animals due to exposure to the cold.

Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through official channels for any further changes in weather or road conditions.
