Two people have died and several others are missing due to persistent rain and floods in the Eastern Cape.
Eastern Cape floods: What are the latest updates?
Continuous rain has hit The Eastern Cape hard, resulting in severe flooding, particularly in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported that a man and a baby died in Kariega, and four women remain missing.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon mentioned that 70 people have been relocated in 55 rescue operations, with emergency services and local police’s K9 Search and Rescue teams actively assisting.
At around 03:00 on Sunday, a security officer reported a vehicle with six people trapped in the flooded Brak River, Rocklands. One male was safely recovered from an island, while an adult female was swept away and is still missing.
The remaining four people were rescued safely on the southern side of the river. Additionally, the fire station in Kariega was flooded, adding to the challenges faced by emergency responders.
Metro police commissioner Andrew Moses urged residents to be cautious on the roads and avoid crossing flooded areas.
Residents stuck in their homes were advised to call the emergency number (041) 585-1555 for assistance.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya confirmed that 65 people had been rescued as of Sunday, but two remain missing.
Power outages were reported in several areas, including KwaNobuhle, Cuyler St vicinity, Riverside, Groendal, and Kamesh in Kariega, Summerstrand, Fitzpatrick, and Humewood in Gqeberha.

The municipality has announced several road closures due to flooding in Kariega and Greenbushes:
- Stock and Daniel Pienaar streets
- Algoa Road
- Cuyler Street
- North Street and Graaff-Reinet Road
- Van Der Riet and Taylor streets
- Victoria Drive to Caledon Street
- Matanzima Road, KwanoBuhle
In Blue Horizon Bay in Gqeberha, the roads have been flooded and are currently inaccessible. Residents are urged to avoid these areas and take necessary precautions while travelling.
Eastern Cape floods: Weather forecast for Monday, 3 June 2024
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning (high likelihood, significant impact) for disruptive rain along the coast of the Eastern Cape and a Yellow Level 2 warning (high likelihood, minor impact) for disruptive rain in the interior of the province.
More heavy rain is expected, which may exacerbate the flooding situation and pose additional risks to affected communities.
Meteorologists predict continued rainfall throughout Monday, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C.
Authorities are working diligently to manage the impact of the floods and ensure the safety of all residents.
